ITALY IN BOOKS: 2011 Reading Challenge
December 16, 2010
I was just surfing Twitter tonight when I came across a new blog: Book After Book.
Blogger Silvia M. is proposing a challenge to read 12 books in 2011 that take place in Italy (not necessarily written in Italian or by an Italian.) I’m in. And I already know what my first title will be: Corelli’s Mandolin, one of my all-time favorites (I hope re-reads are allowed.)
I’ll be blogging about all my selections here.

Hello! Thanks for joining my reading challenge! You know, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin has been sitting on my shelves for a couple of years now and it still remains unread. I had hoped to include it in my reading list for the challenge but the blurb on the back cover mentions only Greece. Since you’ve already read it, are you sure it is also set in Italy? Happy reading!
Hi Silvia, the book has a unique structure, with a bunch of different narrators, some first-person, some third person. Much of the action takes place in Greece, but one of the main characters is Italian, and there’s at least one chapter from Mussolini’s perspective that takes place in Italy, as far as I recall. You should read it. One of my all-time favorites. The first hundred pages were hard to get involved in, but once I got past that, I was completely hooked!
Thanks, I’ll definitely consider it!
